What is it?The Ministry for the Environment (MfE) is the Government’s main advisor on national and international matters which affect the wider environment. Its roles include providing leadership in environmental management, working in partnership with others to improve the state of our environment and ensuring New Zealand has sound environmental management. MfE was established under the Environment Act 1986 and has specific responsibilities under various legislation including the Resource Management Act, the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act, the Aquaculture Reform Act, and the Climate Change Response Act.MfE also administers the Sustainable Management Fund and other funds relating to environmental health. Its mission is: Delivering the environment that New Zealanders expect and deserve. What is MfE’s role in coastal and marine management?MfE primarily provides advice and feedback to the Minister for the Environment. It is involved in writing and co-ordinating policy and procedures for sound environmental management and promoting environmental education, awareness and public participation. This policy and promotion work covers marine and coastal management including foreshore and seabed issues and Treaty of Waitangi claims relating to natural resources.How can MfE help me?Various publications, reports and general information relating to marine and coastal management are available through the Ministry. Its staff are involved in a range of national projects including the Oceans Policy (x ref Oceans Policy). Most reports and publications are accessible through MfE’s website, or by contacting the Ministry for a hard copy, or via internet links from the website.
